I have no video editing skills or free time to acquire them in, unfortunately, but if I did I would definitely make this vid. There's so many directly applicable lines. "I can't sleep 'cause my bed's on fire / don't touch me I'm a real live wire" would be shots of Will Graham writhing and flinching, "I hate people when they're not polite" is obviously Hannibal reacting to rudeness, "run run run away" is Will stumbling through the woods after the ravenstag, all that French could be laid over Hannibal in elegant European settings . . . because in the end they are BOTH psycho killers . . .

Okay, here is the little bookmarklet -- it's pretty limited, but it serves my own laziness, so I share it FWIW and if anyone has the time and wants to upgrade it, go for it and drop me a comment and I'll (ha ha) signal boost any new versions!

There's a great conversation going on at fictional_fans about fic summaries--what works to grab readers and what really doesn't. This is a good comm to follow for general fandom-related conversations, and definitely has the kind of critical mass that most DW comms don't really at the moment.

I recently tripped over this really helpful guide to using HTML in your Dreamwidth posts, from which I have stolen the horizontal bar dividers in this post! I gotta say, one of my favorite things about Dreamwidth is jumping back into the pre-Web 2.0 world of threaded comments and manual HTML. It feels so comfortable, like a nice warm bubble bath. I have to keep up a Twitter & Instagram presence as part of my professional life, and I really struggle with both of those platforms--never sure what the etiquette is or what I should be taking pictures of! I much prefer noodling around with text and formatting like it's 2003 again and I'm making a Geocities website in computer lab.

I think it was out_there (though—correct me if I'm misremembering) who brought up ye olde footnote style of whisperspace, which was/is big especially in fandoms like Good Omens where footnotes are used in the original source as a tone-shifted aside. And I think that those two things—"tone-shifted" and "an aside"—are a big part of it . . .

Still chugging through The Magicians season 2! I was hoping to catch up in time for Season 4 to start airing next week, but that seems unlikely to happen, especially since the semester just started for me and I have an insane number of commitments this semester (teaching two classes I've never taught before, editorial responsibilities, & coursework!).

I also caught Annihilation last night. Verdict: great performances (especially from Natalie Portman and Gina Rodriguez), some very cool visual motifs, and a total lack of coherent or effective storytelling. I was zero percent surprised to find out that it was written and directed by the same guy who did Ex Machina, which I also hugely disliked. At one point around midway through Annihilation, my wife and I turned to each other and said to one another, 'oh my god, whoever wrote this dialogue should be shot.' It's awful! I can complain more specifically and at much more length about the many, many problems with this movie, so please hit me up in the comments if that's a conversation you'd like to have.

I also always find interesting articles through Anne Helen Petersen's twitter feed. She's a pop culture writer with Buzzfeed who specializes in celebrity profiles & social commentaries, and she recently published a piece called How Millennials Became the Burnout Generation which got a lot of traction, and then curated some responses from folks with other experiences for this follow-up. I first heard of her through her excellent, insightful profiles of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner a few years ago--both worth reading if you like critical takes on class, celebrity image, and the publicity machine.

Watching:

I got caught up on season 4 of Legends of Tomorrow, then got curious and went back to Season 1 to see how the show started out. I've been jumping around watching episodes here and there, mostly in the background while I play a game on my phone. My wife tends to wander away because she says it's too loud (all the dramatic music and fight sounds, I think)! I'm liking Sara Lance a lot more as I watch through her early-season character arcs. I like that one of her big characterizations is "cannot visit the past without seducing some historical lady." I'm in Season 2 now and curious to see how the Time Bureau gets started.

Go watch The Favourite

I don’t have much to say here except that I unreservedly recommend The Favourite and it is just as good as I was hoping. So queer, so no-nonsense about its historical setting, so visceral and physical and brutal—but not in the usual way, and not as a euphemism for misogynist. Rachel Weisz is delightful and toppy and much hotter than I thought she could be. I neeeeed fanfic on this one, even though usually with a movie this good I don’t, because I have a bottomless appetite for butch Rachel Weisz grabbing her queen by the throat as a prelude to jealous sex. I could read a lot of fanfic about them, is what I’m saying.

I already watched longnationalnightmare's Queliot & Margo supercuts of all three seasons of the Magicians, and decided the one thing they were missing that I actually cared about was Penny, so now I'm watching the actual show (for my sins). Up to S1E12 now, and I love Penny, have skipped everything with Julia in it (made very convenient because all her scenes are lit blue), love Eliot exactly as much as I already knew I did, and have enjoyed watching Margo really come into her own as a character. This show is trashy but lovable, exactly how I like 'em.

(So far I've been tracking Penny's characterization based on his outfits. The more chest is showing, the happier he is. When he buttons his shirt up all the way, SOMETHING IS TERRIBLY WRONG.)

Re: Eliot's appeal, there is also a great recent meta post from greywash about why he's such a compelling character!

And final question for you all: are there any good active Magicians comms out there? I would love to chat about Season 4 as it comes out next month, but I suspect running one comm is enough responsibility for me.

Bonus: I'm also catching up on season 4 of DC's Legends of Tomorrow (having not seen any previous seasons). It's... not good. BUT they have Maisie Richardson-Sellers playing a swaggery kinda butch shapeshifter lady who IS good... at wearing leather pants and being hot. So I would recommend the show for specific reasons but not in general.

Fandom migration meta

Relearning LJ-style social media interactions over the last few days has been very strange! I've been searching for and collecting animated gif icons, 2007-style, but they're of Thor: Ragnarok, which came out in 2017, so uh--it feels a bit like copying Carly Rae Jepsen lyrics onto a papyrus scroll.

To refresh my memory, I've been reading a lot of the Dreamwidth-for-newbies guides that have been popping up this week (many of which are collected here). It's really driving home how much was different about the internet a decade ago. I used to expect to use some basic HTML basically everywhere--you couldn't take a rich text editor for granted!--but it's super rusty now, it's been years since I had to manually HTML code anything or, god forbid, make a CSS style sheet. On the other hand, the tag system here has a completely different logic to it than Tumblr's or Twitter's, so my 2010s tag searching skills are now useless.

Reading through the friending memes is interesting too--you can absolutely tell fannish generation, not just by what fandoms people are into, but also by what language they use--"problematic" vs. "kinkmeme," whether they have a thought-through access policy or seem confused by the privacy controls, the use of the term "meta" to mean "cultural/critical commentary" (and anybody who says flist/friendslist is definitely an old!).

Anyway, I don't have any concrete thoughts about this, I'm just really hoping that this infrastructural shakeup generates a lot of discussion & meta about different ways of organizing fandom and how they create different community structures and norms. Early Web 2.0 sites (like this one) nudge users toward different kinds of interactions and different levels of agency--and the fact that they're primarily text based makes them less hospitable to unwanted advertising. I.e., here I expect to know all the people I subscribe to and I expect them to frame their content with personal, socially contextual material: "hey guys I did a thing," "remember when we had this fic challenge," "so in last night's episode..." Versus Tumblr or Instagram, where ideally every post is as visual and socially uncontextual as possible, so the ads don't look as jarring by contrast. If your social network is a bunch of strangers yelling, then it's hard to tell right away if one of those strangers is trying to make you buy stuff.

(Relatedly, here's a transcript of a talk that Maciej the Pinboard Guy gave a while back about how he adapted his website to fandom's needs and conventions. Near the bottom of the page he has a section called "Don't Make It Too Easy" where he speculates that opacity, difficulty, and bugginess actually serve a protective function in some online communities by raising the barrier of entry and preventing bad actors from jumping into conversations without an investment in the overall health of the community. Worth reading and thinking about.)

So like everyone else in the world, I'm reviving my Dreamwidth journal so I have a place to find people and engage with fandom once Tumblr explodes. I've been a lurker for a long time, but I did used to write some fanfic, so if you were into Hawaii Five-O femslash or plotty Lewis casefics back in 2011-2012, you might remember me. I'm allheadybooks on AO3 and allheadybooks on Tumblr.

These days I'm a very busy PhD student and fiction writer, so I read tons of fanfic (and appreciate it all so much!) but haven't been creating much new fannish content. I'd be down to join some comms though, if we can get some going, and I might be interested in writing for some flashfic challenges or something low-impact like that. If anybody knows where to find the femslash folks on here, please let me know! I like to read it myself, but I'm also always on the lookout for good femslash to pass on to my wife, who loves to read fic but prefers to have it curated for them.

Lately I've mostly been reading in MCU (especially Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel), OMG Check Please!, Venom, Black Sails, Killing Eve, and Hannibal. I've also followed Teen Wolf, Lewis, Victorian Farm, Vera, Discworld, Jeeves and Wooster, Elementary, Doctor Who, Hockey RPF, Stargate: Atlantis, and Due South over the years (decades?). And I'm doing an extremely belated deep dive into Supernatural fandom, which is--woof--quite the experience.

Yuletide author letter

Dear Yuletide author,

First of all, thank you so much for writing a story for me! I feel very special right now. :)

In general: I love femslash and woman-centered gen or het fic, but dudeslash pairings and man-centered gen or het are good too. I love meta-fic: stories that are self-aware, that play with tropes and genre expectations, and especially stories made up of letters or other "found objects" (journal entries, newspaper articles, parking tickets, etc.). I don't have many absolute dealbreakers, but I'm not a big fan of deathfic or fic that primarily focuses on abuse or violence unless it's really, really, really carefully handled. My Pinboard is here: it's a pretty good sampling of the kind of fic I liked enough to save for later.

Elementary

I think Elementary is the best show on TV right now, and that is 99% due to the character work. Take that away, and you have a moderately interesting police procedural with some fun callbacks to the original Holmes canon. What makes it truly amazing is the full attention given to every character's agency and importance. Sherlock is not the only smart or useful person in the room, and he constantly relies on his friends and colleagues to make his investigations possible. When he oversteps boundaries or dismisses someone unfairly, he gets called on it. The show's awareness of issues surrounding race and gender is not perfect, but still by far the best I've seen on mainstream TV, ever. I love Joan Watson with the passion of a thousand fiery suns and would love to see her life further explored in fic.

21 Jump Street

Basically, this movie is goofy fun and has great comic timing--I love the trippy drug sequence so, so, so much--but I love it for way more than that. I love the contrast that Schmidt and Jenko discover between youth culture ten years ago and youth culture now. I love that the movie highlights the values and priorities of modern teenagers, and in a (largely) non-condescending way. I love the unapologetic way it borrows title and concept from the original show and then goes in a totally different direction and does its own thing. And I think Channing Tatum is super charming.

I love DEBS because it is such a light-hearted, silly, parodic story about first love, and that love happens to be queer. I also think Jordana Brewster is really hot. I love the cheesiness and earnestness of it, and the cartoonish fight scenes. I love Lucy's bro-relationship with her sidekick Scud so, so much, and I am a sucker for excellent montages set to Erasure songs.

I've always loved this show for the pop culture references, but I've been rewatching it lately and falling in love with it all over again now that I'm in my mid-twenties. A lot of stuff I didn't get when I was younger rings very true now (live-in landladies! trying to scrape together the rent money! feeling self-conscious about your lack of progress on life goals!). I especially love Daisy's brand of female loserdom: she's physically awkward, dressed like an overgrown teenager, wildly ambitious but with zero follow-through, over-the-top effusive about how great her friends are, and kind of vaguely feminist in a buzz-wordy kind of way. And I love how the show depicts art, both low-culture--Daisy's magazine articles and Tim's comic books--and high-culture--Brian's weird concept paintings and baffling performance art.

I did not mean to get sucked into hockey RPF. I'm not a sports fan and I don't read a lot of RPF. But it happened. thehoyden recced some Blackhawks fic on slash report, and then I followed some tags on the AO3, and before I knew it I was watching behind-the-scenes videos of the Pittsburgh Penguins Christmas party and laughing at Marc-Andre Fleury's facial hair. I'm married!

Hi folks! I'm mostly a lurker these days--too busy for life updates or writing fic--but I wanted to leave some big news here. My partner and I got married yesterday! Gay marriage was legalized in New York state last year, so we had a year-long engagement and then a small backyard ceremony. I'll post pictures when we get them back from our photographer (a.k.a. my partner's brother's awesome girlfriend).

Just wanted to inform the masses that I wrote a Lewis fic for the Secret Santa over at the lewis-challenge comm, and it's now up both on LJ and A03:

Rating: PG-13 (for murder and gore, not sex, alas)

I also had the most deliciously amazing Lewis/Hathaway fic written for me by blueberry_ash , who is a magical being. It's called each to each and you definitely want to go read it right now. My fiancee and I were visiting friends for New Years when the fic was posted, and I stole her iPhone to inhale this story ASAP--couldn't wait to find a computer. It's gorgeous, tender, well-plotted, with the light but assured turn of phrase I see so often in Lewis fic (it's a talented fandom, what can I say).

ALSO ALSO I am typing all this with gigantic mummy bandages on my right hand! I sliced the outside of my thumb open on a broken glass while washing dishes (uncoolest injury ever). I can't cook, I can't sew, I can't clean, I can't play video games--all I can do is read fic and watch Sherlock. :( :( :( oh wait
